6 Pinoys get Hubert H. Humphrey fellowship

Manila (10 November) -- The Philippine Embassy in Washington D.C. reported that Consul General Domingo P. Nolasco and Vice Consul Corina Apostol met with the Hubert H. Humphrey fellows from the Philippines at a reception hosted by the U.S. Department of State.

The reception was recently held at the Benjamin Franklin Room of the Department of State.

The six delegates from the Philippines are Cordillera Regional Science High School principal Soraya Faculo, University of the Philippines-Los Baņos associate professor Serlie Jamias, Department of Justice (DOJ)-Camarines Sur assistant provincial prosecutor Atty. Zhella Manrique, National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) spokesperson Police Superintendent Rommel Miranda, DOJ-Cebu chief provincial prosecutor Atty. Pepita Jane Petralba, and University of Southern Mindanao professor Luz Taposok.

Atty. Manrique, Superintendent Miranda and Atty. Petralba are currently attending the University of Minnesota, while Ms. Faculo goes to the Vanderbilt University in Tennessee. Ms. Jamias is attending the University of Maryland, while Ms. Taposok is at the University of California in Davis.

Consul General Nolasco expressed appreciation to the representatives of the Department of State and to the President and Chief Executive Officer of Institute of International Education (IIE), Dr. Allan Goodman, for giving the privilege to the six Filipino fellows to study in the United States.

He also encouraged the delegates to apply and share the knowledge they will acquire to their institutions and communities in the Philippines.

According to the keynote speaker and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary R. Clinton, "we expect great things from you when you get home as Humphrey fellows."

Secretary Clinton added that people-to-people connections through programs such as the Humphrey fellowship serve as one of the foundations of the work done by the Department of State.

Funded by the State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Humphrey Fellowship program provides professionals from other countries the opportunity to engage in a one year non-degree study in a U.S. University.

The potential for leadership and commitment to public service serve as basis in the selection of Humphrey fellows. The program is administered by the IIE.

The Humphrey Fellowship has a roster of 4,200 alumni since the program started in 1978. This year's batch of fellows is the largest at 218. (PIA-MMIO) [top]
