Eastern Visayas info agency head calls for designation of information officers by LGUs

By Rodrigo S. Victoria

Tacloban City (11 November) -- Miscommunication of the programs, projects and activities undertaken by local government units (LGUs) prompted the regional head of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) in Eastern Visayas to air out her clarion call for the designation of information officer in each locality.

Regional Director Erlinda Olivia P. Tiu of PIA 8 made her suggestion during the Multi-Sectoral Local Governance Forum held yesterday at the DILG 8 Regional Office.

Director Tiu said that miscommunication or the lack of it in LGUs resulted to lack or absence of transparency whenever government programs, projects and activities were undertaken or implemented in the community.

"The public deserves correct, timely and relevant information", Tiu stressed on the importance of having a focal person who is in charge in the information dissemination of the different government programs, projects and activities to the people in the community.

She emphasized the pressing need of designating an information officer in LGU especially that one of the thrusts of the administration of President Benigno S. Aquino III is on having a transparent government where people can easily access to information pertaining to government transactions.

The PIA director disclosed that the agency will help in training the designated information officer in LGUs to be able to impart to them the necessary knowledge and skills in the different aspects of communication and for them to disseminate information effectively and efficiently.

These designated information officers in LGUs will work hand in hand with the designated information officers in the national government agencies in collaboration with PIA so that maximum information about the different government programs, projects and activities implemented in Eastern Visayas region will be delivered to the people, PIA Director Tiu further stressed.
