PIA Press Release

DA 2, LGUs to give seed subsidy to typhoon, flood-affected farmers

by Thelma C. Bicarme

Tuguegarao City (11 November) -- The Regional Office of the Department of Agriculture (DA 2) has advised the rice and corn farmers from Cagayan and Isabela who were affected by typhoon Juan and the recent flood to report the damages to the Municipal Agriculture Office in their areas so that they will be included in the seed subsidy from the national government and local government units (LGUs).

According to Regional Executive Director Andrew Villacorta their office is currently finalizing the master list of the farmers and the LGUs were given until Friday, November 12 to complete their list so that they could start giving the seed subsidy.

The national government through the DA has allocated almost P200 m for the seed assistance program for Cagayan and Isabela and both provinces will have a counterpart of P30 million.

Under the seed assistance program, the DA has allocated (1) bag of palay seed per hectare of totally affected and half bag for partially affected.

For corn farmers, the DA will also give out P2,000/hectare for totally damaged and P1,000 for partially damaged corn farm.

The provincial government of Cagayan will give as counterpart P600/hectare of palay and P1,000/hectare for corn while Isabela can only afford P300/hectare of palay and P500/hectare of corn.

Villacorta added that they are just waiting for the go-signal from the DA Central Office for them to download the fund to the LGUs. The fund will be paid to the seed companies who will serve as their partners in the project.

The Regional Executive Director has already ordered the seed companies to bring their seed products to the Municipal Agricultural Offices so that the municipal agriculture officers could properly supervise the transactions to be made.

RED Villacorta also announced that they already received the guidelines of the National Food Authority's special procurement program for rain-soaked and storm-damaged palay.

He however said that the NFA can only buy rain-soaked and storm-damaged palay at the price of only P10/kg, P7 lower than the P17/kg for clean and dry palay. (PIA 2) [top]
