Dapitan City (11 November) -- "This is to prove to the whole world that Mindanao is a very peaceful place."
Forester Renato A. de Rueda, National Council President of the Society of Filipino Foresters, Inc. (SFFI) told a group of media practitioners that SFFI chose to hold its national convention in this city to tell the world that Mindanao is peaceful and safe.
Approximately one thousand professional foresters coming from all over the country arrived in Dapitan City to participate in the SFFI's 62nd anniversary and national convention with the theme, "Sound Forestry Governance: The Way Forward."
The activity runs Nov. 11-13 at the world-class Dakak Park and Beach Resort here with high-caliber speakers to talk on topics such as sustainable forest ecosystem management, national framework strategy for climate change, governance in a post-modern world, ethics of professional practice for sound forestry governance, the role of science in sound forestry management and many others.
"We hope that we will go back to our respective places after this gathering full of commitment to supporting sustainable forest management," said de Rueda.
SFFI is an organization of more than 8,000 registered Filipino foresters accredited by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC). It was founded in 1948 with the goal of promoting the science, technology, education, practice and business of forestry in the country.
Majority of its members are foresters in government agencies like the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), National Power Corporation (NPC), Energy Development Corporation (EDC), Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA), Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD), local government units (LGUs) and state college and universities (SUCs).
There are also those connected with the non-government organizations (NGOs) and forest-based industries.
DENR-IX Regional Executive Director Arleigh J. Adorable said "this is the first time the SFFI national convention is being held in region 9." (PIA-ZN) [top]
