Benguet celebrates 2010 Adivay festival

La Trinidad, Benguet (12 November) -- Benguet is back on a festive mood as it lines up a month-long activities in celebration of Adivay on the province's 110th founding anniversary this November.

In a kapihan forum, Thursday, at the Provincial Capitol, Governor Nestor Fongwan led the officials of the province in launching the Adivay 2010.

For this year's Adivay, which means coming together of people to celebrate, Benguet adopts the theme: 'Harmonizing production with demand through Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Good Manufacturing Practices, Emphasizing on health and Environment.'

According to Fongwan, the theme was conceptualized and agreed upon by a committee to inform the people of Benguet that at this point in time, there is a need for the province to capture a higher segment of the market.

'Adivay is also a good opportunity for Benguet to promote its product as after all the province is one of the country's major sources of temperate vegetables and metal requirements such as gold and silver,' Fongwan added.

Fongwan explained that with the effect of globalization, there is a need to abide by demands in accessing the high-end market and users. In doing so, he also stressed the need to protect the people's health and the environment whether in farming or mining.

Benguet foundation day is on November 23 which was declared by Malacaņang as special non-working holiday for the whole province. Scheduled activities for the day are indigenous Food Fair, theatrical and cultural performance, and the annual Benguet Awards.

To highlight the different indigenous and unique products of each of the 13 municipalities of the province, there will be an Agro-industrial and Trade Fair at the Benguet Sports Center in Wangal La Trinidad on November 19-26.

A festival parade is also scheduled on the 20th which will be followed by a'Canao' or a thanksgiving feast.

For the month- long celebration of Adivay, among the scheduled activities are: the search for Mr. and Ms. Benguet; Battle of the Bands; Dongba ni Kabajo (horse) Parade; Jobs Fair cum Career Forum; Mass Wedding, scheduled in three different days and separate church; a cooperative convention; Barangay nutrition Scholar's Congress; Health Forum; Mr Benguet (body Building Competition); Marathon Fun Run; Muay Thai (competition); Arnis; Inter-LGU sports competition and many more scheduled events which both locals and tourists will surely enjoy.
