PIA, MINDACOMNET gather info officers for research and communication planning workshop

General Santos City (18 November) -- More than 80 information officers of government line agencies and local government units from all over Mindanao have converged here yesterday for a three -day seminar workshop in research and communication planning.

The workshop sponsored by the Philippine Information Agency 12 (PIA 12) and the Mindanao Communicators' Network Inc. (MINDACOMNET) focuses on re-educating government personnel involved in information dissemination on the importance of communication planning as a major factor in the effective implementation of government programs and projects.

Dr. Olivia Sudaria, PIA 12 Director and MINDACOMNET president, said conducting research and planning communication activities are basic components that ensure effective implementation of government programs and projects.

"Besides giving the basic principles and skills on how to conduct research, we want to emphasize that communication activities are not incidental elements of government undertakings," Dr. Sudaria said.

"We have to help the information officers realize that no government program can succeed without communication and that setting up a systematic communication plan would make sure that objectives are achieved," she stressed.

PIA's Staff Director for Planning and Communication Research Division Nilo Mamaclay, who is also the workshop's primary resource person, told participants during the opening ceremonies that research guarantees that the information delivered and the implementation strategies are appropriate to achieve the objectives of any communication undertakings.

Other resource persons are Ms. Rhea Kristine Cy, section chief of PIA's Monitoring Unit and Ms. Pamela Villanueva, a faculty member of the Department of Development Communication of the state-run University of Southern Mindanao in Kabacan, Cotabato.

Topics include conducting surveys, situation analysis, media monitoring, and focus group discussion and organizing a communication plan. (DE Doguiles/PIA 12) [top]
