PDEA burns biggest number of cocaine bricks in Eastern Visayas

Tacloban City (19 November) -- The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in region 8 conducted this morning the burning of the biggest numbers of cocaine bricks confiscated in Eastern Visayas.

The burning of the 93 cocaine bricks totaling 102.926 kilograms was conducted besides the regional office of PDEA 8 located at the Government Center Grounds in Baras, Palo, Leyte in the presence of PDEA national officials led by PDEA Director-General Dionisio R. Santiago, PDEA 8 Regional Director Julius Navales, PNP-Leyte officers and men, national and local government officials and members of the private and government media in Tacloban City.

According to Liza Baoy, information officer of PDEA 8, the burning of cocaine bricks this morning that was conducted besides the regional office of PDEA 8 was the second time that was conducted in Eastern Visayas.

The burning of cocaine bricks was in accordance to Section 21 of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

The first burning of cocaine bricks in the region was conducted on May 25, 2010 at the Balyuan Park here this city totaling to 72 bricks with a total weight of 80.146 kilograms.

She added that the burning of cocaine bricks this morning was the fourth time nationwide having conducted the first burning of cocaine bricks on December 28, 2009 at the PDEA Central Office in Manila and the second time was on February 18, 2010 in Malabon City with 200 cocaine bricks.

The PDEA information officer informed that the estimated total price of the 93 cocaine bricks that were burned this morning will reach to P514.63M at a street price or selling price at P5M per kilogram of cocaine.

"The cocaine bricks that were burned this morning were part of the confiscated cocaine bricks through operation dubbed as Operation: Samar Bricks jointly conducted by operatives of PDEA 8, AFP-PNP 8, Philippine Coast Guard and the LGUs in the province of Eastern Samar" Baoy further said.

The mentioned cocaine bricks were recovered mostly in the coastal towns of Eastern Samar where the first to be recovered was on December 22, 2009 in the possession of Manolito Codoy in the municipality of Llorente.

She disclosed that the 93 cocaine bricks were recovered from the joint operations conducted from June 15, 2010 to August 11, 2010.

The burning of the cocaine bricks was part of the activities in line with the celebration of the Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Week which runs from November 14 to 20, 2010 with the theme "Teach Healthy, Not Drugs". (PIA 8) [top]
