Jeepney federation supports fare increase petition

by Lito Dar

Baguio City (20 November) -- The Federation of Baguio-Benguet-La Union Jeepney Drivers and Operators of Baguio-Benguet-La Union will support petition to increase the jeepney minimum in the wake of price hike in oil products.

Perfecto 'Jun' Itliong, federation president and Baguio Public Transport Affairs Office head said if a petition for an increase in the minimum fare is filed by the different transport groups in the National Capital Region, they will be joining and supporting it.

'We also have intention of filing, lugi na talaga, umaabot na ng P49 per liter ang krudo dito sa atin, kumpara sa P46 - P47 per liter of diesel sa Maynila", Itliong said.

Itliong said they are considering initially a 50 centavos fare increase from the minimum fare of P7.50 to P8.00.

Itliong discounted the possibility that transport groups here would stage a rally or any similar activity to petition for a fare hike.'Wala kaming balak at walang dahilan para mag-rally, lahat naman ay maaaring pag-usapan ng maayos,' he said.

Meanwhile, Itliong also announced that the Baguio Public Transport Affairs Office (PTAO) in partnership with Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC-Baguio) will be conducting a continuous First Aid Training every Sunday starting this November 21.

'It is part of our emergency preparedness program. Ddapat kahit mga driver, pati na rin mga dispatcher ay may sapat din na kakayahan na magbigay ng first aid sa anumang kaganapan ng aksidente o sakuna,' Itliong explained.

Itliong is inviting all jeepney and taxi associations in the city as well as communications and volunteer groups to join in the said First Aid Training Seminar. Registration fee for the seminar is P200 plus P100 for the Philippine National Red Cross membership (plus ID).

If the participants finished the two Sundays training course, they will be given First Aid Training Certificate by the PNRC-Baguio. (PIA) [top]
