Tagum City (26 November) -- Starting next year, the Davao Speleological and Conservation Society (DSpeCS) will schedule eco-tours and spelunking events packages highlighting fruit-bearing seasons so farmers can also raise substantial income from these tourism activities.
Guesting in Kapihan sa Kapitolyo, DSpeCS Executive Director Edna Parcon said her group will arrange a "Marang Atbp" package tour next year targeting nature's parks in the municipality of Kapalong and San Isidro in Davao del Norte.
DSpeCS is designing event such as this to take place from August to September during which fruits particularly Mangosteen, Durian, Lanzones aside from Marang are in abundant harvests, she said.
"Buko is also available year-round," she said in an interview.
Among the areas targeted for package tours and spelunking events during fruit season are Suan Nature's Park in Kapalong and Dakudao Eco-tourism Park in San Isidro, both of which have caves which local governments are promoting for nature-appreciation visits.
A former tourism and information officer of Kapalong, Parcon said wide areas surrounding both nature parks had been planted with fruit trees through the local government agro-forestry project which got support from the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources office of Davao del Norte.
She said the local government of Kapalong started off its drive for tourism development sometime in late 1990s with tree-growing activities.
"Now it's harvest time; we might as well help the farmers market their harvest," she said.
DSpeCS which is based Kapalong, Davao del Norte is also engaged in community preparation. It has conducted basic caving orientation and cave guiding seminars particularly in communities where there are caves showcased for tourists-visit.
"We are training (cave) poachers and birds' nest collectors to become cave guides so they would appreciate the importance of protecting our caves," she said. (PIA XI) [top]
