By Ninfa B Quirante

Catbalogan, Samar (November 26) -- Some 500 student athletes in the province of Samar are gathered in Catbalogan, Samar for this year's Samar Provincial Athletic Association (SPAA) Meet. The athletes are competing in the four-day event that started yesterday November 24, 2010 and will end on the 27th.

Grouped into four units for secondary and three units for elementary, the athletes will participate in athletics, badminton, baseball, boxing, football, chess, gymnastics, lawn tennis, swimming, sipa takraw, table tennis, volleyball, taekwando, softball, arnis and dance sports.

The event, centers on the theme "Bridging unity, peace, and progress through sports."

According to Sir Alvin Aguirre of San Sebastian National High School, principal who brought 12 girl-athletes, he sees that the students who participate in sports events such as the SPAA Meet, become more responsible as students because of the discipline they practice in sports.

The event will close on Saturday at the Samar Sports Complex through a closing program where winners will be awarded.

Winners will represent the province in the Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) Meet on February next year at Calbayog, Samar. (PIA) [top]
