Feature: Biodiversity our Life support system

Davao City (27 November) -- Davao Region Biodiversity Summit was held with the theme "Biodiversity is our life support system: Let's Conserve it," it was brought together by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Health (DOH), Department of Tourism (DOT), Local Government Units (LGUs), private sectors, academe and the media, pledging to work together in addressing many environmental problems.

Assistant Secretary Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubal of Department of Health said, "Human life and human health are inextricably link with our environment," reminding that global warming and climate change are brought by human wreck.

She added that there is a need to preserve all variety of species and that biodiversity by all means be preserve.

By adapting a healthy lifestyle and reducing the use fossil fuels through jogging, walking, control of tobacco use and breastfeeding to lessen the production of tin cans and baby bottle which uses chemicals in order to produce such are simple ways to help the preservation of our biodiversity. Ubial said.

Chief Executive Officer Jose Lorenzo Tan, World Wide Fund for Nature, Philippines (WWF) said that finding out what is going on now could help to better understand what is happening and be able to know what to do with the problem.

Knowing that a healthy environment will contribute significantly to local tourism, improvement in public health and it will also ensure a good resource base for sustainable development where everyone can benefit from.

Davao Gulf is one of the identified key biodiversity areas (KBA) in the world.

Regional Executive Director Jim O. Sampulna said that he hopes after the summit everyone can say "Davao region will be a greener, healthier and a more beautiful place to stay."

"Conserving our biodiversity is not a concern of only one sector, it is everyone's duty," DENR stressed. (PIA XI-Intern) [top]
