Comelec conducts special elections in 4 Eastern Visayas barangays

Tacloban City (November 27) -- Special elections were set to be conducted today in the four barangays in Eastern Visayas where election failure have been reported during the October 25 Barangay elections, the Commission on Elections in Region 8 informed.

Comelec 8 Regional Director Jose Nick Mendros said the per Comelec Resolution 10-1297, special barangay and SK elections will be conducted at Barangay San Vicente in Catubig town; Barangay Langob in Laoang; General Luna in Lope de Vega town, all in the province of Northern Samar; and in Barangay Casidman, Arteche town in the province of Eastern Samar.

Comelec declared a failure of election at Barangay San Vicente in Catubig, Northern Samar, due to the non-arrival of election material on October 25 Barangay election. It was learned that the Board of Election Inspectors were on the way to the barangay when the boat they were riding capsized and the election materials were not recovered.

In Barangay Langob, Laoang, Northern Samar, a failure of election was declared after unidentified armed men snatched the ballot boxes.

Meanwhile, intense rivalries among candidates in Barangay General Luna of Lope de Vega, Northern Samar and in Barangay Casidman of Arteche, Eastern Samar were the reasons cited for the failure of elections in the two barangays.

As of Friday, November 26, Director Mendros said that all the ballot boxes, official ballots and other election paraphernalia to be used in the official elections have already been sent to the four villages through their local Comelec offices.

Director Mendros said he has already coordinated with the 8th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army for the deployment of security personnel from the Philippine Army and Philippine National Police to the said villages to ensure the peaceful conduct of special elections.

Director Mendros said that the total voting population of not less than 2,000, for both Barangay and SK. This number is manageable, Director Mendros said.

The new set of Barangay and SK officials will start their term of office at lunchtime of November 30. (PIA 8) [top]
