Samar delegation needs P3M for EVRAA

By Ninfa B Quirante

Catbalogan, Samar (November 30) -- The winners from the recently concluded Samar Provincial Athletes Association (SPAA) Meet need approximately P3M to prepare, compete and represent Samar province in the Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) Meet next year.

Eduardo Pabunan, Division Sports Coordinator for Samar confirmed in an interview that the amount will cover training and other needs for the competition. A third of the whole budget will cover expenses for food for the 568 delegates.

"Sports development is not only the concern of the DepEd but also of the local government Unit (LGU) especially in terms of finances," the sports enthusiast said.

"It is a tough job to be steering the'sports wheel' in Samar," Pabunan said. He added that some coaches bring their athletes to competition for compliance and not necessarily for their winnability.

"Students and even out of school youth should be organized in the community with training and provision of sports equipments," he suggested. There are also teachers who do not favor when athletes are pulled out from their classes.

He thinks it is a deprivation of an athlete's rights to indulge in sports.

"If athletes are developed, they become productive members of the society and can assist the community and those engaged in sports seldom become a liability to the community."

Pabunan mentioned that he suggested to Sangguniang Kabataan to open other sports activities and not only basketball.

"Basketall is only for those who are tall, what about the others? Maybe they can excel in marathon, cycling, volleyball and even athletics."

"I am hopeful that the LGU headed by Gov. Sharee Ann Tan will approve this," Pabunan concluded referring to the budget proposal he and his team submitted to the LGU.

Presently, the paper works for the competition are being prepared consisting of birth certificates, pictures and other documents.

Calbayog City is set to host the EVRAA Meet by February of next year. (PIA-Samar) [top]
