Iloilo City (30 November) -- Percentage wise, sixty percent of the barangay officials in Western Visayas are newly elected, assumed office effective noontime of November 30, said DILG Director Evelyn Trompeta.
Director Trompeta said in a PIA interview that Western Visayas has 4,050 barangays, and in the recent synchronized barangay and SK elections, each barangay elected one Punong Barangay and seven Kagawads.
Trompeta said that the Punong Barangays are the direct link of the government down to the grassroots.
"They provide leadership in the barangays, and they have dual functions as compared to the Municipal Mayors who functions only as the executive, because the Punong Barangays act as the executive and perform other functions such as legislative and as head of the katarungang pambarangay.
Meanwhile, DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo called on the barangay officials in a published report to promote and practice good governance during their term.
Elected barangay officials nationwide play a vital role in ensuring the delivery of basic services to the people, Secretary Robredo said. (PIA6) [top]
