PIA Press Release

Feature: Peace for Development

By Aurora J. Casimpan

Tacloban City (December 3) -- Peace may finally come to the country.

Stakeholders of peace in the country are one in saying that development of a country is faster when the climate is peaceful and orderly. No investor or stakeholder for economic growth would bang his head against forces which curtail or kill investments.

President Benigno S. Aquino III is determined to bring to an end the cause of instability in the country. The President is well aware that unless peace and order is achieved the country will not move forward.

The government peace panel is reaching out to the National Democratic Fund (NDF) and the Communist Party of the Philippines- New People's Army (CPP-NPA) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) for talks on the lasting solutions for peace for all sides.

While it can be said that the government panel led be Alexander Padilla and NDF counterpart has agreed to an initial meeting for formal talks, negotiations for the MILF resumption of talks is dependent on a request for a new facilitator.

Meantime negotiations for the peace talks with the forces of insurgency is being worked out, the Mindanao 2020 Peace and Development Framework Plan is ready to be endorsed to President Aquino.

The Mindanao 2020 is a product of a cross-section of Mindanaoans who formulated the direction for which Mindanao's development would jumpstart.

Hopefully, since the participants themselves formulated the plan for Mindanao, that sense of ownership would serve as key for the successful implementation of the plan.

Lualhati Antonino, chair of the Mindanao Development Authority (MINDA) will lead Mindanao officials from both executive and legislative branches of government in indorsing and signifying commitment to the Mindanao 2020.

Stakeholders of peace and order need not look far in formulating solutions to lasting peace. The people for whom any peace process is intended for should be involved in any peace effort.

Cross-sector representation should be the key in formulating plans and endeavors since the people are the direct recipient. (PIA-8) [top]
