DOST, Albay to establish Automatic Weather Station in BU local campus
Legazpi City (7 December) -- The Provincial Government of Albay (PGA) and the Department of Science and Technology through the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) agreed in a joint undertaking to establish an automatic Weather Station (AWS) at the Bicol University Tabaco Campus.
Center for Initiative and Research on Climate Adaptation (CIRCA) director Nong Rangasa, initiator of the project said the joint undertaking will be funded under the Millennium Development Goals ? Fund 1656 project, a joint program partnership by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Spanish Government.
Rangasa said this project seeks to mainstream climate risk reduction into key national and local development planning and regulatory processes, enhancing of key partners and communities to undertake climate resilient development and testing of integrated adaptation approaches with upscaling potentials.
"Governor Joey Salceda has signified its willingness to provide the necessary assistance and share its resources for the effective implementation of this project," Rangasa said.
The establishment of the AWS in the are will primary serve as an early warning and monitoring system for disaster mitigation in the 1st district of Albay and also as a means to improve agricultural productivity through a community-based climate information which will be the basis for early warning in areas that prone to extreme climate events.
