Truth Commission declared unconstitutional
Manila (7 December) -- The Supreme Court has declared the Truth Commission formed by President Benigno S. Aquino as unconstitutional.
Voting 10 to 5, the majority of the Justices voted that the creation of the Commission contained in EO No. 1 violates the equal protection clause of the Constitution since it singles out the investigation of graft and corrupt practices of the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said while they are saddened by the decision and while it is a setback to their efforts for reform and accountability of the previous government this will not stop them from pursuing their fight against graft and corruption as this was one of the present government's campaign promise.
Lacierda said they will still meet with the President and discuss the options that are open
However, Lacierda also said they will file a motion for reconsideration.
The court gave Malacaņang 15 days to answer the ruling. (RO/PIA6) [top]
