ASEAN Children's Forum to be held in Clark

San Fernando City, Pampanga (19 October) -- The Philippines will play host to the first ever ASEAN Children's Forum that will be held on October 19-23, 2010 at the Fontana Resort inside the Clark Special Economic Zone in Pampanga.

The forum serves as a channel that will give voice to how children perceive current regional issues and how they can be resolved by governments with children and young people's participation and work to address children's concerns with a regional perspective.

The regional forum of children also aims to encourage governments to develop national frameworks on child participation and create policies that promote child's rights and ensure children's participation.

This year, the proposed agenda for the children's conference include forging an agreement on a common vision of the ASEAN Children's Forum and preparation of its terms of reference that include discussion on how children can be viewed as partners in the ASEAN, frequency of holding the forum, criteria for selection of participants/delegation, mechanism to generate country issues and concerns on children, set milestones/thematic issues to be discussed/addressed at the ASEAN level, among others.

Another agenda on the list is to identify actions children want primarily from government especially on emerging issues on children such as global warming and climate change, violence against children (VAC) and trafficking.

Participants in the forum will come from all ASEAN-member countries that include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The participants passed through selection process and were officially endorsed by the Government as country delegates. As a child protection policy, the children, delegates are accompanied by chaperones who serve as mentors during the forum.

Outputs of the Children's Forum will be deliberated at the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) level and will be reported to the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Social Welfare and Development for appropriate consideration and action.

The ASEAN Children's Forum will be convened every three years. (PIA) [top]
