Cebu hosts 2nd TAYO ASEAN Awards

by Roberto M. Cabardo

Cebu City (November 27) -- Cebu makes another mark in its history as it hosts the 2nd Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO) ASEAN Awards this week.

The awarding ceremony scheduled this Friday at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) will feature youth organizations from the ASEAN member countries that spearheaded sustainable programs, projects and activities that seek to respond to the realization of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) jointly undertaken by the National Youth Commission (NYC) Philippines and the Committee for the ASEAN Youth Cooperation (CAYC) will unfold on Nov. 30 at the Plenary Hall of the CICC.

TAYO ASEAN Organizing Committee Chair and NYC Commissioner Michael Acebedo Lopez who is also responsible in handcrafting the TAYO trophy says that "Cebu's the best choice for this year's activities considering that it was the venue of the historic and successful 12th ASEAN Summit."

Also a commemoration of the ASEAN's 40th founding anniversary, the TAYO ASEAN Awards is a brainchild of National Youth Commissioner Chairman Richard Alvin M. Nalupta who is currently the Chair of the CAYC representing the Philippines.

TAYO ASEAN is inspired by the success of an annual competition among youth and youth serving organizations known in the country as the Search for the Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations in the Philippines.

The awardees are chosen by their respective governments based on a criteria that include impact of the project entry to the community (50 percent), social mobilization (25 percent), innovativeness (15 percent), and sustainability and probability of duplication of project and program (10 percent).

Among this year's recipients are Persatuan Melayu Keriam (Brunei Darussalam), Youth Association of Cambodia Korps Mahasiswa Kubungan Internasional (KOMAHI UMY) University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, Semangal Usaha Maju Jaya Youth Association (SUMBER) of Felda Sumpang Wa Ha Kota Tinggi Lobor (Malaysia), Kapansana Akibat sa Kaunlaran ng Bayan (KAAKBAY-Philippines) and INitiate (Singapore).

Expected to grace the occasion are prominent TV personalities Boy Abunda and Bianca Gonzales who will share their views on the significance of the UN Millennium Goals (MDGs), internationally-acclaimed Cebuana singer/performer Raki Vega, prominent government officials, and representatives from the ASEAN Embassies who are invited to grace the occasion.

As a parallel activity before the awards night, NYC and CAYC Chair Nalupta will preside over the 12th CAYC Management Meeting and the 16th National Secretaries Meeting at the CICC on Nov. 29.

While in Cebu, the awardees are scheduled to visit the Gawad Kalinga site in Talamban and other historic sites.

Considering the significance of the international event, the Department of Tourism Cebu will host a Luau dinner for the TAYO ASEAN awardees, CAYC and NYC officials at the Maribago Blue Waters Beach Resort tomorrow, while on Thursday (Nov. 29) Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia will treat all guests and awardees to a welcome dinner at the Provincial Capitol Social Hall. (PIA Cebu) [top]
