Cebu City (27 May) -- Presidential Management Staff (PMS) Chief Sec. Cerge M. Remonde underscored the importance of the transportation sector for the realization of the economic integration among the ASEAN member countries.
Remonde, during the 25th ASEAN Senior Transport Officials Meeting which kicked off Tuesday here at Shangri-la Mactan, said that better transport systems will help facilitate intra-regional trade and investment, which is essential in sustaining the economic viability of the region.
"Economic goods and services are useless if they are not delivered to the market in the right quantity, with the preferred quality and at the required time," he stressed.
He cited the recent efforts of the ASEAN member countries to transform the region into an economic community that fosters a free movement of goods, services and capital.
For this economic integration to achieve a sustained economic growth and development though, an efficient and integrated transportation system is needed, Remonde noted.
But aside from promoting free movement of people, the PMS Chief asserted that enhanced transport linkages will further promote liberalization in air and maritime transport services which will eventually improve the region's access to international markets.
He said that since ASEAN is at the maritime crossroads, there is a need to improve the efficiency of its transport system, both the shipping services and land transport, to enhance the region's trade competitiveness.
This, he stressed, can be achieved through a coordinated policies and programs, the application of transport facilitation measures and the harmonization of technical aspects of design and safety rules, procedures and standards.
Remonde, who was the guest speaker during the opening ceremony of the 3-day meeting, assured the delegates that the Philippines affirms its commitment to the regional development roadmap and to the establishment of the ASEAN economic community. (PIA) [top]
