Philippines to host 5th Annual Southeast Asian Cinemas Conference

by Roberto M. Cabardo

Cebu City (5 November) -- After the World Tourism Forum, ASEAN Meetings, and other international events, the spotlight will once again beam on the Philippines this month as it hosts the 5th Annual Southeast Asian Cinemas Conference on Nov. 20-22 at the Ateneo de Manila University.

Leading this year's roster of speakers is the Father of Independent Philippine Cinema, Kidlat Tahimik. Other filmmakers in the conference panels are Lav Diaz, Khavn de la Cruz, Jim Libiran and Brilliante Mendoza.

Film scholars from the top universities of the country join the discourse as moderators and panelists. Dr. Roland Tolentino, Dr. Tilman Baumgärtel, Dr. Nicanor Tiongson and Dr. Clodualdo del Mundo are just some of the academics in ASEACC 08 Manila. Undergraduate and graduate students in the fields of film, communications, humanities and the arts are expected to attend the conference.

Film critics, programmers and organizational heads also take part in the event. Individuals like Nick de Ocampo, Teddy Co, Alexis Tioseco, Mervin Espina, Kiri Dalena and Oggs Cruz will grace the event with their experiences and insights.

Dr. Benedict Anderson is one of the foreign guests that will be flying to Manila, together with Philip Cheah, Tan Bee Thiam and famous mainstream actor Ben Slater. Several other foreign participants will also be presenting their papers and films during the conference.

The 5th Annual Southeast Asian Cinemas Conference – Manila 2008, is hosted by the School of Humanities of the Ateneo de Manila University together with the Society of Filipino Archivist for Film and Loyola Film Circle, in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. For further details and to register visit www.aseacc.org.

Historically, aside from being one of its citizen's favourite pastimes and a multi-billion industry, the Philippines has also produced many internationally renowned filmmakers. Among them are art visionaries Lino Brocka and Eddie Romero.

It has also lured investors from big filmmaking studios in Hollywood and other parts of the world. Notwithstanding that film schools in Manila, the nation's capital as well as Cebu in the Visayas have also helped shape the continuing evolution of the country's filmmakers and film industry that reaches out to its Asian neighbours thereby promoting comity and understanding.
