3-day 25th ASEAN-STOM kicks off May 27 in Cebu
Cebu City (26 May) -- Cebu welcomes the foreign delegates of the three-day 25th ASEAN Senior Transport Officials Meeting (STOM) that will kick off tomorrow at the Shangri-la Mactan Resort and Spa in Lapulapu City.
The theme of this year's meeting is "One Vision, One Identity, One Community."
Presidential Management Staff (PMS) Sec. Cerge Remonde will deliver the welcome address tomorrow morning which will be followed by a group photo session of the delegates.
Sec. Leandro Mendoza of the Dept. of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) said "it is an honor and privilege to host this very important meeting of the senior transport officials of the ASEAN member countries who are bonded by common interests, commitment and goals in the pursuit of opportunities for further cooperative work in the transport sector to deepen and enhance ASEAN integration and foster the region's sustainable development, stability, security and prosperity."
DOTC is the leading agency of the event.
The STOM has been institutionalized as an annual gathering to discuss policy support measures needed for the development of transport infrastructures and to strengthen transport linkages and connectivity to enhance regional integration and competitiveness.
The matters that will be discussed in the meeting include: strategic schedule and scorecard for ASEAN transport cooperation in the Economic Community Blueprint, the mid-term assessment of the ASEAN transport action plan, the ASEAN transport cooperation agreements/initiatives, consideration of reports of the STOM working groups, the ASEAN transport infrastructure projects, progress of transport cooperation with dialogue partners such as China, India, Japan, Korea and European Union, the ASEAN logistics development policies, new initiatives to enhance transport cooperation in ASEAN, and the schedule of the signing of the open skies agreement of ASEAN member countries which is due for implementation this December 2008.
The 3rd ASEAN National Tourism Organizations - Senior Transport Officials Meeting (NTOs-STOM) will likewise be held back to back with the 25th ASEAN STOM. The meeting will discuss about the status of the NTOs-STOM joint priority programs, which includes air travel, cruise tourism and facilitation of land travel.
Participating nations to the Cebu event are the 10-ASEAN member states namely Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao P.D.R., Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
The objectives of the ASEAN are embodied in the ASEAN Declaration which states that the aims and purposes of the Association are: 1) to accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region 2) to promote regional peace and stability through abiding respect for justice and the rule of law in the relationship among countries in the region and adherence to the principles of the United Nations Charter.
