RP hosts ASEAN Regional Conference on Womenomics

Tacloban City (November 23) -- The Philippines through the National Council of Women of the Philippines, is hosting the ASEAN Regional Conference on Womenomics and the 13th ASEAN Confederation of Women Organizations (ACWO) General Assembly November 20-23 at the Manila Hotel.

Dr. Amelou Reyes who is the president of the National Council of Women of the Philippines and at the same time the president of the ASEAN Confederation of Women Organizations, informed that the theme of the Conference is " ASEAN Womenomics: Empowering Women and Expanding their Participation in the Globalized Economy."

The Conference which formally started on November 21 brought together government officials, women leaders, managers, policy makers, development workers, educators, entrepreneurs and students from the ten ASEAN member nations, and dialogue partners from USA, Canada, Australia and other countries.

Dr. Reyes expressed appreciation for the 100 attendance of the women leaders from the ten ASEAN member nations, for the first time in the history of ACWO.

Although President Gloria Arroyo couldn't attend the activity because of her trip to attend the APEC meeting in Peru, her message to the ASEAN women leaders was read by Hon. Myrna Yao, the chairperson of the National Commission on the Role of Filipino Women.

The Conference promotes Womenomics as a development strategy to alleviate poverty and intensify women empowerment at the national, regional and local levels.

The WOMENOMICS combines the words "women" and "economics", developed during an international conference of world economists in 2006. It means giving economic value to women's contributions in the global economy.

According to The Economist, the future of the world economy lies increasingly in female hands. The increase in female employment has been the main driving force of growth; these women have contributed more to global GDP growth than have either new technology, or the new giants India and China.

WOMENOMICS can therefore be considered as a benchmark of women's empowerment. It serves as the driving force for women to empower themselves so that they can effectively contribute to economic development.

The expected outputs of the Conference are the Manila Declaration and the Womenomics Framework Action Plan which shall be adopted by concerned stakeholders at all levels.

The Department of Interior and Local Government has issued a Memorandum Circular encouraging the local chief executives and their concerned officials to participate in the three day live out conference. (PIA 8) [top]
