Province of Sorsogon (July 16) -- The Provincial Council for the Welfare of Person with Disabilities (PCWPWD) here spearheads the observance of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week in this province set on July 17-23.
The NDPR Week will rally behind the theme: "Kapag May Access, May Success".
A celebration of the Holy Mass will commence the week-long affair, followed by motorcade along the main thoroughfares of Sorsogon City and a brief opening program at the provincial capitol ground.
Also within the week, the council, in cooperation with SIHSFI, SAMARE, DTI, CSWDO, women's group and the PWD sectors will also sponsor skills and capability enhancement seminars/trainings including Food Processing Demonstration, Massage Demonstration, Leadership Training, One Town One Product (OTOP) Exhibit, and Community-Based Rehabilitation Program Orientation for municipal and city SWDO personnel.
The NDPR Week culminates on July 23 in time for the birth anniversary of Apolinario Mabini, the "Sublime Paralytic, whose courage during the Philippine revolution of 1896 greatly influenced Filipinos to fight of the tyrants who then ruled the country
Provincial Social Welfare and Development officer-in-charge Sonia S. Garcia said the NDPR Week aim to steer government and non-government organizations, the community, and the PWDs themselves in the advocacy and recognition of the modern day version of PWDs whom the government consider as partners in nation-building.
It can be recalled President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has declared the period from 2003-2012 as the Philippine Decade of PWDs under Proclamation No. 240 in view of the government's desire to mainstream PWDs' welfare and development.
"Self-help groups of the PWDs here, assisted by NGOs with PWD related concerns, are also very active in their campaigns on disability prevention, rehabilitation and equalization of opportunities for their sector," Garcia noted.
Meanwhile, executive director Agnes D. Caballero of the Sorsogon Integrated Health Services Foundation, Inc. (SIHSFI) also related more and more groups and individuals are now involved in numerous efforts in the mainstreaming of PWDs into the society, particularly in this province. (PIA Sorsogon) [top]
