by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (2 October) -- Some 375.612 million matured coconuts have been harvested in Northern Mindanao during the first 3 months, this year, higher by 0.7% compared to 372.950 million coconuts in the same period, last year.

"Among the region's 5 provinces, Bukidnon posted the highest increase in harvest, from 10.474 million to 11.604 million nuts or 10.8%," Luis G. Cruz, Regional Manager of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), said.

This was followed by Camiguin with 9.1%, from 19.447 million to 21.210 million nuts, Lanao del Norte, from 119.203 million to 122.702 million or 2.9% and Misamis Oriental, from 113.571 million to 115.407 million nuts or 1.6%. Misamis Occidental, however, posted a negative 5%, from 110.255 million to 104.690 nuts.

Cruz also said the total area planted to coconuts was noted at 298,126.91 hectares with Mis. Or. posting the biggest area of 101,698 has. or 34.11%, followed by Mis. Occ., 97,630.59 has. or 32.75%, Lanao del Norte, 75,326.50 has. or 25.27%, Camiguin, 14,859.21 has. or 4.98% and Bukidnon, 8,612.61 has. or 2.89%.

Moreover, a total of 29,650,923 fruit bearing coconut trees were noted in the region, during the period, with Mis. Or., having the most number of 9,916,853 trees or 33.46%, Mis. Occ., 9,132,393 trees, 30.77%, Lanao del Norte, 8,139,477 or 27.45%, Camiguin, 1,798,382 trees or 6.07% and Bukidnon, 563,818 trees or 2.24%.

On the other hand, the region had a total of 3,099,612 non-bearing coconut trees, most of which are in Mis. Occ., 1,490,495 trees or 48.09%, followed by Mis. Or., 532,610 trees or 17.19%, Lanao del Norte, 503,964 trees or 16.25%, Camiguin, 374,900 trees or 12.10% and Bukidnon, 197,443 trees or 6.37%.

Meanwhile, Cruz said the region's total copra production for the period was noted at 89,30 metric tons, down by 2.37% compared to 91,191MT in the same period of 2005.

"The period's low copra production could have been due to the low rainfall which resulted in the development of smaller nuts with the conversion factor placed at an average of 4.44 nuts per kilogram of copra compared to only 4.03 nuts required per kilogram during the same period, last year," he said.

Average farm gate price of copra, also dropped by 25%, from Php17.48/ Php13.4/kg., while average mill gate price went down by 22%, from Php19.61/kg. in 2005 to Php15.20/kg. in 2006.

Similarly, production of young coconuts in the region, during the period, went down by 0.49%, from 626,420 to 623,320 nuts as negative production were noted in Lanao del Norte, from 128,732 to 31,317 nuts or 75.67% and Bukidnon, from 133,454 to 127,808 nuts or 4.23%,

"Three provinces, however, posted increases in green coconut production: Mis. Or., from 267,765 to 358,446 nuts or 33.87%, Mis. Occ., from 25,871 to 30,782 nuts or18.98%, Camiguin, from 70,598 to 74,967 nuts or 6.19%.," Cruz again said. (PIA 10) [top]
