PIA Press Release

EV tourism website markets, promotes Region 8

By Marivic A. Alcober

Tacloban City (3 October) -- Among the mandates of the Department of Tourism (DOT), Secretary Joseph Durano stressed that marketing and promotion function is the one which the Department should give priority focus on.

Relative to this, DOT-8 headed by Regional Director Karina Rosa S. Tiopes created the Eastern Visayas Tourism Website dedicated to promote the entire region as a travel and tour destination. According to Tiopes, the web-launch took place last 09 September 2006 during the conduct of the 17th Philippine Travel Mart held in Mandaluyong City.

The website was established to create awareness of and promote the various tourism assets of the Eastern Visayas Region to the global tourist market. Specifically, it aims to provide travel tips that includes information on "getting there", transportation, accommodation, places of interest, shopping tips, tour packages, travel agencies and recreational facilities, Tiopes added.

Further, it was learned that it also provides updates on the latest tourism-related developments and initiatives in region 8; it serves as a medium through which the department can provide timely response to client requests and queries. The website also serves as a link between the provincial/city tourism offices to DOT clienteles; and gathers feedback from web users, clientele as well as visitors of Region 8.

The Eastern Visayas tourism web, Tiopes emphasized, serves the local and global web users looking for new travel destination. It is of great help to travel and tour operators, hoteliers and other tourism related establishments; national line agencies, business sector, local government units and non-government organizations; and academe and students.

Inputs to the web were the counterpart provided by the provinces of Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran, Samar, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar and the cities of Tacloban, Ormoc, Maasin and Calbayog. (PIA-8) [top]
