GenSan mayor alerts constituents on tropical storm Neneng

By Cathy Apelacio

General Santos City (5 October) -- The city government here did not dilly-dally in advising its constituents to be extra cautious and be well-prepared to face any occurrence of disaster.

City Mayor Pedro Acharon Jr. made this statement during the city government's regular press conference Tuesday following the announcement of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Administration (PAGASA) that the island of Mindanao might experience light to heavy rains brought about by the new tropical storm "Neneng."

"If you think that your life is in danger, you might as well move out to safer grounds and not wait to be told by the government," Acharon alerted his constituents particularly those who are residing near or within danger zones such as coastal, landslide and flood prone areas.

Ephraim Beliran, action officer of the City Disaster Coordinating Council (CDCC) also warned the Generals to be vigilant "because what happened to Luzon in recent week might also happen to us here."

A week ago the country was ravaged by typhoon "Milenyo", which brought the death toll at 190. Most of the number of deaths recorded was in Calabarzon area, touted as the country's most progressive region outside Metro Manila.

Beliran, however, assured the public that the city government is doing everything to ensure their safety at all costs.

"We have been continuously strengthening our disaster contingency management plan to address different calamities that may possibly occur in our area in coordination with different agencies of the government, non-organizations and private sectors," he further said.

Pagasa reported that it spotted the storm Neneng moving 7 kph at west northwest with winds 85 kph near the center. It is expected to be 220kms east southeast of Aurora this morning (Oct 5). (PIA SarGen) [top]
