CDA celebrates Cooperative Month

Cebu City (5 October) -- Cooperative month is now celebrated in October based on Presidential Proclamation No. 493 declaring the month of October and every year thereafter as cooperative month to encourage wider participation of all sectors of society in nation-building through cooperativism. This supersedes Proclamation No. 2288 dated November 10, 1982.

Highlights of the celebration is the 8th National Cooperative Summit to be held in Puerto Princesa, Palawan on October 4-6, 2006 with the theme "cooperatives: Making a Real Difference Bansang Nagkakaisa…May Pusong Kooperatiba."

In Cebu City, cooperative month opens with streamers hung in cooperative offices. The DOH 7 also held a parade from their office to the Cebu City Sports Complex in coordination with the Cebu City Development Council. Vice-Mayor Michael L. Rama and Cong. Antonio V. Cuenco graced the opening salvo which was followed by a mass and Pinoy games.

According to Atty. Alexander Patac, acting Assistant Regional Director, to make a real difference in cooperativism, members have to be matured enough and pay their obligations. The cooperative has to instill discipline to all members so that it can help the cooperative grow as well as its members. As of August 31, 2006, there are 3,044 cooperatives registered cooperatives in the region but only 50% are operating well, he added. (PIA-Cebu/hfg) [top]
