Naņas airs frustrations over Caraganons' indifference

by Lovely Laudette D. Gamba

BUTUAN CITY (October 5) -- General Antonio Naņas of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Caraga Region expressed frustrations over Caraganon's indifference to crime prevention and solution in the region.

"Crime prevention should be everybody's business, what happens in Caraga is mind your own business. This attitude of the community makes it difficult for the police to prevent and solve crimes", says Naņas during the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC) meeting recently.

The comment came about amidst RPOC members' protests over the reported incessant incident of highway robberies in Surigao del Sur. Based on report by P/Supt. Francisco Dungo, there were already 11 highway robbery recorded in Surigao del Sur.

Dungo also revealed that communist terrorists (CT) remains a potent threat in the region due to their escalated offensive strikes against government troops.

Following Dungo's report on escalated CT offensive on government troops, Colonel Luini Mirar, 401st Brigade of the Philippine Army (PA) commented that some police stations are not ready to handle insurgency.

Mirar added that the PNP should be prepared to offense not just defend. Mirar also revealed that often, the PNP failed to seek the AFP's assistance in case of CTs encounter.

Mirar also warned PNP that CTs will continue to attack municipalities. He further revealed that there are six CT influenced barangays in Butuan and twenty-three less influenced.

"But, Butuan City's peace and order situation is peaceful in general and squirmish in remote areas are under control", Colonel Mirar said. (PIA-13) [top]
