PIA Press Release

DTI Leyte conducts packaging and labelling clinic for OTOP Implementors

Tacloban City (October 8) -– In order to enhance the capability and competitiveness of the OTOP products in Leyte, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Leyte Provincial Office will conduct a Packaging and Labelling Clinic on October 12-13, 2006 at the Leyte SMED Center in Tacloban City.

DTI Leyte Provincial Director Desiderio Belas Jr. said that his office has invited the twenty two local government units in Leyte with OTOP project in the food processing sector to attend the clinic where packaging specialists from San Miguel Packaging Specialists, Inc. will conduct technical consultation on appropriate packaging and labeling of locally produced food products.

Director Belas said that the activity will teach the Food SMEs and Otop LGU coordinator on knowledge on packaging and labeling food products and to enable them to identify the right packaging materials for their products.

The conduct of one on one clinic on their existing food products will prepare them for the Visayas Treasures of the Island Trade Fair in Cebu City on November 20-24, 2006, Director Belas added.

The participants are requested to bring samples of their food products as their counterpart. No registration fee will be collected, Director Belas said, because sponsoring agencies have committed funding for the activity.

The sponsors include the Provincial government of Leyte which has always been supportive of activities for the development of SMEs, the Leyte SMED Council, San Miguel Packaging Specialists, Inc. and DTI Leyte.

Director Belas called on the local government units to continue their support for the SMEs in the food sector in Leyte . He also expressed optimism for the successful implementation of the OTOP program in the province of Leyte as the province’s humble contribution to the realization of the Medium Term Development Plan of the Arroyo Administration.
