DOLE accepts scholarship for OFW kins

TABUK, Kalinga (9 October) -- The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) is now accepting applications for the Education for Development Scholarship Program (EDSP) through the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

Dr. Avelina Manganip, DOLE Provincial Officer informed that the scholarship is offered only to active Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) beneficiaries or dependents that will be enrolling for a four or five-year course for the school year 2007-2008 in any Commission on Higher Education - accredited college or university.

Through the scholarship, the student will be provided with P30,000.00 per semester financial assistance until completion of the course regardless of the status of the OFW member, provided the Scholarship Agreement is complied with.

"The OWWA will be directly giving said financial assistance to the school as tuition fee," she said adding that the grant is provided only once.

To apply, Manganip said that applicants should accomplish the following requirements: Accomplished application forms; three copies 1"x1" ID pictures; proof of relationship to member like birth certificates of the applicants and of the member duly certified by the Local Civil Registrar; Form 137 or transcript of record; Health Certificate (Form 2) and Applicants Certification (Form 3).

Also included in the applicant's documents is the Proof of OWWA Membership, which could be any of the following: OWWA E-Card, Official receipt of OWWA contribution, Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC), Seaman's Identification and record Book (SIRB), Employment Contract duly processed by the POEA and Certification from OWWA Membership Registry Division.

Applicants must not be more than 21 years old, in good health and with good moral character, and must be able to pass the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) National Examination and the College Admission Test of the school where they intend to enroll.

Applicants could submit their accomplished application forms to DOLE-Kalinga or send directly to OWWA-CAR in Baguio City on or before October 31, 2006.
