DTI chief plans to organize consumers group

By Rodrigo S. Victoria

Naval, Biliran (9 October) -Ė Finally, after several attempts of the public consumers here to organize a consumerís group that will truly represent their clamor and sentiments, a bright prospect for its organization is in the offing as the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) chief in the province of Biliran publicly announced in the PIA Kapihan that she will spearhead in organizing a consumerís group early next year.

Engr. Celerina B. Barrot, Officer-In-Charge of DTI-Biliran said that it is high time that a consumers group be organized in the province of Biliran especially in Naval, the capital town of the province, for the consumers to have a juridical personality in whatever consumer-related issues or redress and grievances they wanted to bring or present to concerned agencies and proper authorities.

The DTI chief noted that that there was no single particular consumers group present in the province of Biliran since she started working here.

She heard of several talks and plans from the consumers here in Naval to organize a group but it did not materialize because of lack of effort and interest of the consumers or it might be the absence of leadership among the consumers to lead its organization thatís why it was not organized until this time.

The consumers will not have a strong force and unified voice when they will act individually on any matter that affects their rights as consumer, Barrot said.

Barrot added that it would be more easy and fast to resolve any complaint, clamor and conflict affecting the consumers if it will be done in a collective manner rather than on individual effort.

She admitted that the sense the urgency for the creation of a consumers group because of the growing demand coming from the consuming public for the creation of such group.

Barrot further said that there is really a need for its organization here considering the flourishing trade and commerce as evidenced by the growing number of establishments present in the commercial district of the capital town which is contributory also to the growth of the number of consumers buying different goods and products and patronizing the services offered by business establishments.

She emphasized that the creation of a consumers group is also one way of helping and protecting the consumers from being victimized from any unscrupulous trade practices and illegal commercial acts that in one way or the other would result to a great loss and disadvantage on the part of the consumers.

The creation of a consumers group is in accordance with one of the basic rights of a consumer which is the right to representation which means that the public consumers must be given the basic right to equal representation in issues affecting the well-being of the consumers, Barrot further said.

The DTI-Biliran chief is contemplating of inviting interested public consumers to attend the organizational meeting which is the creation of a consumers group here and is expecting that many will come for the success of the endeavor. (PIA-Biliran) [top]
