NSO-Biliran to hold statistical quiz for 17th national statistical month

Naval, Biliran (10 October) -– In order to enhance public awareness and appreciation of the importance of statistics to national development, the provincial field office of the National Statistics Office (NSO) here will conduct a statistical quiz on October 12, 2006 as a major activity in celebration of the 17th national statistics month.

According to Rose Marie V. Lumbre, Provincial Statistics Officer of NSO-Biliran, this year’s celebration focuses on the theme “Empowering Consumers through Responsive Energy Statistics” as mandated in a memorandum circular issued by Secretary Romulo L. Neri of the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), an attached agency of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA).

Lumbre said that government agencies and institutions and the private sector are also enjoined to actively participate in the programs and activities to be undertaken in line with the statistical month celebration based on the Memorandum Circular No. 001-06 issued by Sec. Neri.

She said that the suggested activities that government agencies and institutions and private sector based on the memorandum circular include symposia, workshops, orientation seminars, exhibits, slide shows and publication of statistical reports, indicators and other relevant information among others with particular emphaisis on the theme.

NSO-Biliran chief revealed that the agency will conduct two sets of statistical quiz which are the 2006 Provincial StatQuiz that wil be participated in by 4th year high school students and the 2006 Philippine Statistical Quiz that will be participated by first year college students.

Lumbre said that the provincial winner for the 2006 Philippine Statistical Quiz will represent the province of Biliran in the regional finals at Tacloban City on November 14, 2006 .

She informed that the office has already sent invitations to the heads of secondary and tertiary schools in the province of Biliran informing them of their participation to the contest and have a wider and bigger participation from the mentioned target participants.

Other equally important activities that were already undertaken by NSO-Biliran include the display of statistical data like the monthly consumer price index projected population and other important and relevant data of the province of Biliran including the whole of Eastern Visayas and of the whole country, Lumbre said.

She added that as part of the activities of the month-long statistical celebration, personnel of NSO-Biliran will conduct a series of symposia in the different secondary schools regarding the importance and use of statistical data. The group will likewise conduct a statistical survey on the number of households, business establishments and on many other areas which are needed by the office especially in updating their statistical record and data.

The NSO chief also urged the people in the community to be statistically-conscious because the data gathered by their office are statistical indicators of the things we have done that will serve also as basis for government policy-makers in crafting policies and laws for the welfare of the people and the development of the country in general.

Lumbre likewise appealed to the public to support the activities undertaken by the agency in order to make the month-long celebration a successful one. (PIA-Biliran) [top]
