Palace expresses high hopes for tourism in Eastern Visayas

By Rodrigo S. Victoria

Naval, Biliran (10 October) -- In a message conveyed by Victor Domingo, Presidential Assistant (PA) for Eastern Visayas to the people in the municipality of Kawayan during the town's 100th Founding Year Anniversary celebration today, he expressed high hopes in the development of tourism industry in Eastern Visayas.

PA Domingo said his positive outlook in the tourism industry in Eastern Visayas came after the tourism people of Boracay, Palawan and the Eastern Visayas region have come-up with a three-in-one (3 in 1) package for foreign tourists.

He further said that in this package, tourists from Europe, United States and from other foreign countries can visit three beautiful destinations that include tour from Boracay to Palawan and to Calicoan Island in Guain, Eastern Samar.

Sec. Domingo revealed that part of the 3 in 1 scheme is the servicing now of a cruise ship that will ferry tourists from Boracay to Palawan then to Calicoan Island.

The tourist destinations mentioned by Secretary Domingo are part of the Central Philippines Super Regions where President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (PGMA) considered this part of the four super regions in the country as the tourism area.

Sec. Domingo relates his observation during his brief stay in one of the fully developed tourist destinations in Thailand particularly in Pattaya where he said that our beaches here are good compared to the beach in Pattaya where the sand is not white but colored like clay.

"Their beaches there cannot compete with our white and beautiful beaches here in the country," Sec. Domingo proudly said in his message.

But he said what he admired most are the infrastructures along their long-stretch beaches like motels, five star hotels and many big restaurants that are just across the beaches to cater to the needs of tourists.

These infrastructures are right there and then in their beaches and that is where lies the big difference between here and in Thailand, Sec. Domingo added.

However, Sec. Domingo likewise said that with the recent development of the tourism industry in Central Philippines Super Regions especially with the coming-up of the 3 in 1 package, there is really a big hope for the tourism industry in this part of the country.

"With all the beautiful tourist destinations that we have had in Eastern Visayas especially in Biliran province, hopefully the influx of both local and foreign tourists will be cascading from the primary tourist destinations to secondary tourist destinations in the country" he said.

Sec. Domingo cited the case of Cebu as the primary tourist destination but with the exposure of the beautiful beaches of Bohol particularly in Panglao, Bohol now has become the secondary tourist destination and because of this, tourism industry in Bohol thrives at present.

Aside from the congestion in primary tourist destinations like Boracay, tourists will now go to less congested tourist destinations that can offer them the same scenic atmosphere like what the Calicoan Beach in Western Samar and other tourist destinations in Eastern Visayas can also offer, he said.

Sec. Domingo also stressed the development of hot and cold springs in Caibiran, Biliran where Japanese people and other foreign nationals like most, because he had already seen hotels located in the mountainside in some parts of the country and in other countries of the world where one can see free-flowing waters in their vicinity.

He emphasized that the province of Biliran has a big potential in the tourism industry and that very soon the province will become one of the most visited tourist destinations in Eastern Visayas because of the soon to be constructed roll on-roll off (roro) port in the municipality of Kawayan.
