Land mines discovered in Surigao Norte
PANACAN, Davao City (11 October) -- Combined forces of the AFP and the PNP troops discovered several landmines in Silop, Barangay Santo Rosario Bacuag Surigao Del Norte last October 7, 2006.
The explosives were brought to 30th IB headquarters for safe keeping. The presence of the landmines is yet another blatant display of NPA atrocities. It is stipulated under the agreement of Comprehensive Agreement on Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CAHRIHL) that the landmines are prohibited. This agreement was signed by the NDF (National Democratic Front) representing the NPAs together with the Philippine Government.
"Time and again, these terrorist and blood sucking band of gangsters are at it again. They say something and does another" Major Jose Maria Cuerpo II Commander of the 5th CRG said.
Cuerpo also stressed that these activities clearly demonstrate the true intentions of the group. The extensive use of landmines without regard of the lives of the victims, for as long as they (NPAs) struck fear to the populace to be able to extract extortion money from the people.
The presence of the landmines in the area can cause extensive property damages but above all high probabilities of civilian casualties.
The government troops in the area commend the unified efforts of its members and the civilians that lead in to the thwarting of the perilous land mining plans. (5th CRG News/PIA XI) [top]
