DepEd extends support for cooperativism

Pasig City (11 October) -- Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Jesli Lapus bared the different initiatives of the department in support of cooperativism during the National Cooperatives Summit held in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

In a message delivered for him by DepEd Region IV-B Regional Director Paraluman Giron last October 5, Secretary Lapus underscored the importance of cooperatives and their impact on national economic progress.

"This National Cooperative Summit is a testament not only to the potential of cooperatives, but also a testament to the achievements thus far by many of our cooperatives nationwide," Secretary Lapus said. "Through this event, we shall work together with teachers nationwide to deliberate their concerns through cooperative work."

The DepEd chief also laid down different priority initiatives of the department, including the thorough review and revision of DepEd Order 95, s. 1998 on the operation and management of school canteens, to create an atmosphere that is conducive to the growth and development of cooperatives, the strengthening of the management and operations of various credit and consumers cooperatives in DepEd, and the rationalization of the Cebu-based Teachers Bank, which he hopes could be converted into the National Teachers Co-op Bank.

Secretary Lapus also recognized the important role of teachers in promoting the value of Cooperative Enterprise among students, by virtue of Section 11 of Republic Act 6939 on Cooperatives in the Education System, which states that 'the principles and practices of Cooperatives and its role as a factor in the national economy shall be disseminated both in formal and non-formal education.'

In closing, Secretary Lapus called on the collective support of various cooperatives in the advancement of the various cooperatives in the country.
