PIA Press Release

Creation of RITECC website in East Visayas underway

By Neil D. Lopido

Tacloban City (11 October) -- The Regional Information Technology and E-Commerce Committee (RITECC) here chaired by Director Cynthia Nierras of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is now busy preparing on the creation of RITECC website to be at par with the explosion of information and communications technology (ICT) and be the next ICT hub in the country towards the realization of our battlecry, "Eastern Visayas Goes IT!".

Mr. Eliseo Padagdag of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) presented to the RITECC members the proposed website and domain to be used in a meeting yesterday at the La Rica Hotel, Tacloban City .

The website will contain the composition of RITECC located at the About RITECC section to include the mission and vision among others. Other sections will include ICT Sector Profile, News and Updates, Programs, Roadmap, and Forums.

The meeting also tackled ICT Statistics, which are vital and need to be included in the website as "statistics corner" so that "we will know where we are in ICT" thus said Ms. Evangeline Paran, regional chief of the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) who chairs the Technical Working Group.

Ms. Paran said that they aim to achieve four tasks namely: data assessment; actual generation, compilation of ICT statistics; formulation of policies in the generation of ICT statistics; and promotion of ICT profile of Eastern Visayas.

The NSCB regional head discussed further their initial action plan for 2006 to include data assessment, data gathering, data packaging and dissemination, formulation of strategies on the generation of available ICT statistics, and formulation of policies on the generation of ICT statistics.

Meanwhile, the group agreed through a majority vote that a Website Development Training be prioritized in lieu of the Bayanihan Linnux Training which did not pushed through.

RITECC is an affiliate committee of the Regional Development Council (RDC) and is composed of multi-sectors from government agencies and private sector representatives who are stakesholders of ICT industry and whose main objective is to promote and develop the ICT industry in Region 8.
