Palo commemorates Leyte Gulf Landings

Tacloban City (11 October) -- Way back October 20, 1944, Gen. Douglas MacArthur first set foot on Philippine soil and this was at the Red Beach, Candahug, Palo, Leyte. Gen. MacArthur was accompanied by several other personages such as the former President Sergio Osmena and Gen. Carlos P. Romulo. The Allied Forces land on this beach during the World War II Battle of Leyte Gulf which was described as the biggest naval battle ever fought in all war history.
To commemorate the event, come October 20, Palo Information Officer Godofredo Regis bared that the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Palo headed by Municipal Mayor Teodoro Sevilla has lined-up several activities.
An on-going LGU Liberation Cup Basketball Tournament for midgets and juniors has been facilitated in coordination with the Palo Sports Federation (PASPORTS) and BARECOM which started last September 16 and will end on October 18; on October 14, there will be an in-door football game to be conducted at the Montejo Sports Complex in Palo; the 2006 Kauswagan Mountain Bike Challenge which will take place at the MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park. Said mountain bike challenge will be participated in by members of the Leyte Gulf Off0Road Bikers Association, Inc. in coordination with the LGU of Palo.
Regis further revealed that in the morning of 16 October, the 2nd Palo Open Beach Volley Tournament will take place at Sabang, Salvacion spearheaded by the PASPORTS and the provincial government, while in the afternoon of the same day, there will be a Contest Art Exhibit and photo exhibit centered on the them "Memories of the Past", to be conducted at the 2nd floor of the Palo Municipal Hall. Said activity will be participated in by the Bunga Art Group, ATITIPALO, ACT Palo and the LGU.
It was further learned that a Dental Civic Action Mission will be held on the 17th through the efforts of the SK Federation and the Philippine National Police Dental Service, regional office. On the same day up to the 18th, there will be a Palo Adventure Race which was made possible through the concerted efforts of the Leyte Coalition of Outdoor Enthusiasts for the Environment, the ELAC, ACT-Palo, LGORA and the PCSO.
Under the National Voluntary Blood Services Program, a Bloodletting Voluntary Blood Donation activity will take place at the Palo Municipal Hall on the 18th, while a "Karahibot Barrio Fiesta" will take place on the 19th at the Palo Public Plaza or Montejo Sports Complex.
During the commemoration of the Liberation Day which is on the 20th, a Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be celebrated at the MacArthur Landing Memorial National Park offered for those who died during the Leyte Gulf landings. The Liberation Mass is sponsored by the municipal government of Palo and the provincial government of Leyte . After the Mass a Commemorative Program with Japanese Ambassador Yashimoto as guest, will be conducted attended by representatives from the different government and non-government offices in the region.
Aside from Palo, the municipalities of Tolosa, Dulag and the City of Tacloban are also having their own respective activities to commemorate the Leyte Gulf Landings. (PIA-8) [top]
