PGMA: Contingency plans in place for OFWs in Korea
Quezon City (11 October) -- PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said that contingency plans were in place to ensure the safety and welfare of Filipinos in Korea in case tension escalates.
"We have contingency plans that act as a protective mantle over our nationals in all corners of the globe, whose safety and security are our primary concern," Arroyo said in a statement.
"Learning from the lessons of the recent past, the government has made preparations for every contingency that will require taking our nationals out of harmís way. The actions of this government in the case of the evacuations from Iraq and Lebanon are a case in point," she added.
Arroyo also urged Filipinos in South Korea and their families to keep calm and allow the diplomatic process "to work on the issues and mechanisms of stability that bear upon the situation."
Government preparations for Filipinos in the Korean peninsula stemmed from a recent nuclear test conducted by North Korea, which caused concern and anger worldwide. (PIA) [top]
