Commentary: North Korea's nuclear test brings global threat
Negros Occidental (12 October) -- The strong statements of North Korean leader Kim Jong II defying pleas from neighbors and superpowers brings threat to the world.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo joining the worldwide outcry describe the tests as a 'Damocles sword' hanging over East Asia - the Philippines included, threatening regional integration and places the prosperity of all peoples in this part of the world at risk.
While the Philippine government and the rest of the world hopes for the United Nations Security Council would convince the North Korean to stop the tests, the Department of Foreign Affairs is putting in place its contingency plans for some 50, 000 Filipino nationals in Korea.
Learning from previous incidents like Lebanon and Iraq where the government is caught off guard of evacuating the nationals from these countries, the government's contingency plans act as a protective mantle over the Filipinos in all corners of the globe.
Government urges the Filipino workers in South Korea and their families to keep calm and allow the diplomatic process to work on the issues and mechanisms of stability that bear upon the situation. (PIA/EAD) [top]
