Vigilance is key to consumer protection, says DTI Ilocos

by Carlo P. Canares

Vigan City, Ilocos Sur (13 October) -- The Provincial Director of the Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) of this province stressed the importance of vigilance in protecting the interest of the consumer. Director Grace Lapastora, in an interview in the NBN4 talks show Ekslusibo hosted by Mike Escobar, said that “a vigilant consumer is the best-protected consumer.”

The director was reacting to this year’s theme of Consumer Welfare Month “Enforcing Consumer Rights towards a Progressive Philippines.”

Lapastora said that every consumer has rights to ensure his safety and comfortable existence, protect his interest and promote his welfare. Among these are rights to be protected against hazards to health and safety; to be protected against deceptive, unfair and unconscionable sales acts and practices; right to information and education; to a healthy environment and provision of basic needs. Enforcing these rights, she stressed, will effect not just into the availability of goods and services in the market but more so establish consumer product quality and safety standards in business and industry.

However, with rights come responsibility. Director Lapastora pointed out that every consumer should also recognize his responsibilities toward fellow consumers particularly the disadvantaged groups; and towards the environment on the impact of our consumption. (PIA) [top]
