Palace cites Senate, House for poll automation bill passage
Manila (13 October) -- “We appreciate the prompt action of the Senate and the House on the poll automation bill that will pave the way for a stronger democracy founded on the sanctity of the ballot.”
The statement was issued by Press Secretary and Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye following the passage of the controversial bill at the Upper House being pushed by Senator Dick Gordon after its ratification at the Lower House.
Bunye said the electoral reforms are on top of President Arroyo’s good governance agenda and that it is high time to put an end to the mess of the past and to bring the nation closer to the threshold of political modernization and maturity.
“All concerned government institutions will continue to team up with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on this front and we laud both the Comelec and the Department of National Defense (DND) for signing this unprecedented agreement which will insulate the Armed Forces from the electoral process, thus removing a source of recurring political controversy,” he added.
