PGMA lists 2 requirements for peace and development in Samar island

Tacloban City (October 16) -- President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo called on the people of Samar to be united and be one Samar, one people, one culture in order to achieve true peace and development in the entire island of Samar.

The President who many people noticed to be in high spirits and in a very a happy mood, enthusiastically acknowledged the cheers of the big crowd which every now and then interrupts her message. Indeed, the people and school children lined up in the streets from the airport up to the Tiburcio Tancinco Memorial Institute of Science and Technology, is a very inspiring scene of people truly happy to see the well-loved President.

The President proposed two important agreements she wanted to make with the people of Calbayog and Samar. The first component of the covenant is the attainment of true peace by solving the insurgency problem in the area. She said that she has assigned very good peace-keeping leaders in the Region and in Central Visayas : General Luna, who is the commanding general of the Central Visayas command, Major General Rodrigo Maclang of the 8th Infantry Division and General Eliseo dela Paz of the Philippine National Police Region 8.

She expressed her belief that with the leadership of the three leaders and with the support and cooperation of the local government officials and the citizens of the Samar Island, peace and security will be achieved in the Region.

The second part of the covenant is the improvement of the travel facilities in the island. This she said will be achieved with the completion of the Manguinoo Port which will make Calbayog as part of the Eastern Roro Nautical Highway connecting the island of Samar to Biliran and Masbate.

The President said that with the achievement of the two elements of the covenant, she is sure that Samar will be able to capture the tourists who are already visiting the other parts of the Central Philippines. This will align the beautiful island of Samar to the plan of making Central Philippines Region as the Center of Tourism of the country.

The gathering of all the officials of Samar provinces which include Congressman Catalino Figueroa of the 2nd District of Samar, Congressman Reynaldo Uy of the first District of Samar, Congressman Marcelino Libanan of the province of Eastern Samar, Congressman Harlin Abayon of the province of Northern Samar, Governors Tan and Evardone, Mayor Mel Sonon Sarmiento and the other mayors in Samar, the President is optimistic that unity, peace and development will be achieved in the Samar Island.

The President was accompanied during her visit by Secretary Arturo Yap, Secretary Gabriel Claudio who is also from Samar, Assistant Secretary of Air Transportation Office Nilo Jatico, among others.

The crowd during the 58th Charter Anniversary Celebration of Calbayog City includes local government officials, barangay officials, national line agency heads, students, non-government organizations/cooperatives heads, members of the academe and students representing the youth sector.
