by Flor Jackson

Naval, Biliran (16 October) -- It’s a grand celebration here in Naval and the entire province of Biliran as Bishop Filomeno G. Bactol of the Diocese of Naval marks tomorrow, Tuesday, October 17, 2006 his 25th year of Episcopal ordination as bishop.

In an interview with Fr. Cornelio “Jun” Amante, Co-Pastor of the Cathedral Parish of Naval and in-charge of the program of activities for the celebration, he said that a lot of visitors from the religious sector not only in region 8 but from other parts of the country will be coming over to Naval in the island province of Biliran to attend the celebration.

Expected visitors, he said, are the bishops of Eastern Visayas which include Bishop Leonardo Medroso of the Diocese of Borongan; Bishop Emmanuel Trance and Msgr. Angel Hobayan, Bishop Emeritus both of the Diocese of Catarman; Bishop Maximiano Cruz – Diocese of Calbayog; Bishop Precioso Cantillas – Diocese of Maasin and Msgr. Isabelo Abarquez, Auxiliary Bishop of Palo.

Msgr. Jose Palma, Archbishop of Palo who is one of the invited guests could not make it to Naval to join Msgr. Bactol in celebrating the milestone of his being a bishop and God’s servant because he is out of the country on official business, Fr. Amante said.

Furthermore, he said that the occasion will also be highlighted by the presence of Msgr. Pedro R. Dean, Archbishop of Palo who retired two years ago and former First Lady of the country, Madame Imelda Romualdez Marcos.

Likewise, he said, that all priests and religious sisters in Eastern Visayas and outside the region are invited to attend the occasion.

Msgr. Bactol who was born on November 29, 1939 was ordained priest on April 6, 1968 at the Sacred Heart Seminary Chapel in Palo, Leyte by then Most Reverend Teotimo Pacis, Bishop of Palo.

His Episcopal ordination as bishop took place at the Cathedral of the Transfiguration in Palo, Leyte on October 15, 1981 and was officiated by Most Reverend Bruno Torpigliani, Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines.

Fr. Amante said that the celebration marking Msgr. Bactol’s silver anniversary of his Episcopal ordination as bishop should have been held on the actual date which was yesterday, a Sunday but because all priests, bishops, religious sisters and other visitors are involved in the church activities in their respective parishes on this day, it has been moved to October 17 to give everyone invited to celebrate the occasion with the honoree.

Msgr. Bactol was appointed Bishop of Naval on November 29, 1988 and was formally installed on March 8, 1989 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary of La Naval in Naval, Biliran.

Part of the activities to the two-day celebration which starts today is a cultural presentation dubbed “Tribute to Msgr. Bactol” to honor him on this occasion.

The cultural show which will be held tonight at six o’clock at the Naval Institute of Technology (NIT) gymnasium and will be presented by the talents and students of the Cathedral School of La Naval (CSLN) and NIT also aims to entertain the visitors who will come from all over region 8 and outside the region.

The highlight of the celebration is a Pontifical concelebrated mass tomorrow, October 17 at 9 o’clock in the morning to be officiated by the honoree himself together with all the visiting bishops and priests and all priests in the Diocese of Naval in Biliran province.

To give the homily during the concelebrated mass is none other than Bishop Leonardo Medroso, of the Diocese of Borongan. (PIA-Biliran) [top]
