LAGAWE,Ifugao (16 October) -- For being a Hall of Famer winning for three consecutive years the award for most outstanding winner in nutrition in the Cordillera Administrative Region, the province has qualified for 1st Year Maintenance Award for CROWN (Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition) at the national level.
The award is a collective result of an efficient and effective management of the nutrition program in the province which has been a CROWN for the last three years.
Dra. Mary Jo Dulawan, Provincial Nutrition Action Officer, said that in line with meeting the Millenium Development Goal relative to malnutrition, particularly Goal I which is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, the Provincial Nutrition Council (PNC) has initiated strategies which improved the status of poverty in the province.
The improved terms of nutrition as indicated in the Human Development Index and the exit of the province from the 20 poorest provinces in the country are indications that the PNC is on the right direction, Dulawan said.
Three indicators include the reduction of underweight pre-school and school children which give a picture of the processes; the functional structures that were put in place and the small initiatives that were introduced by the PNC.
In a meeting called for by the PNC Action Officer, additional strategies in generating resources to fund activities were taken into consideration. In assessing the strength and weaknesses of the council, nutrition interventions and nutrition education should still be strengthened to sustain the initiatives that were started.
Initial activities include the launching of the Nutri Fun Chalanâ, a fun walk and the Barya Mo, Kalusugan Ko project to raise funds to augment the nutritional food supplement of high- risk HENSI-PAP barangays in the province. (PIA-Ifugao) [top]
