Garantisadong Pambata launched in Balbalan

BALBALAN, Kalinga (16 October) -- The simultaneous conduct in the province of the Garantisadong Pambata program of the Department of Health was launched in this Child Friendly town.
Provincial Nutritionist Frances Sebastian, who led the health team, said the launching involved two parts – the information and education campaign about the 4 Bs of the program, and the actual administration of Vitamin A and de-worming capsules and a massive vaccination.
Sebastian explained the 4 Bs stands for sufficient Bakuna, Bitamina A, Babay Bulate and education about Breastfeeding.
Garantisadong Pambata is a program of government aimed to address high mortality rate among children. It is included in the government’s Millennium Development Goals through the National Center for Disease Prevention and Control. With its activities, chance of child survival is improved.
Recent study shows that Vit. A reduces death by 50% from measles, 40% from diarrhea and 30% from dengue and malaria among children.
During its launching here, the Municipal Health Office sent its entire force to assist in the actual distribution of Vit. A capsules and mebendazole -500 for deworming to 128 children aging 6-71 months.
The health team also administered the same program to 236 children in the barangays of Balinciagao Norte, Balinciagao Sur and Magsilay in Pasil.
Vit. A is administered to two target age groups of children; 6-11 months, 100,000 IU and 12-71 months, 200,000 IU.
Conduct of activities under Garantisadong Pambata is every after six months, on the months of April and October.
Last year, Kalinga achieved the highest supplementation rate in the region on Vit. A with 90% for the age group 6-11 months and 85% for both 12-59 and 60-71 months. (PIA-Kalinga) [top]
