Arroyo to businessmen: Security forces on top of situation

Quezon City (17 October) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has assured businessmen in the country that security forces were on top of the situation even after raising the alert levels in Metro Manila and Mindanao amid the recent bombings in the southern Philippines and continuing terror threats.

At the same time, Arroyo commended those who had tipped off authorities, which had foiled other attempted bombings in Mindanao.

Speaking at the 8th CEO Forum of the Semiconductor and Electronics Industries in the Philippines in Makati City, Arroyo also called for vigilance in reporting suspicious activities.

"The authorities are on top of the situation, but they need the active support of the community to safeguard the perimeters of peace and order," she said.

"I call for global alertness in reporting suspicious activities even as calmness and sobriety mark our everyday work and livelihood. The strong cooperation between the vigilant public and our security forces will deny the terrorists any room to carry out sinister plots," she said.

Arroyo also urged barangay (village) officials to act as "force multipliers" in implementing public safety measures.

Peace and security are among the key factors for the country's competitiveness, she said. (PIA) [top]
