PGMA to Samar Island folk: One Island, One People, One Culture

Tacloban City (October 18) -- President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo exhorted the people of the three provinces of Samar Island to think, unite and work together as “One Island, One People, One Culture” in order to achieve development and progress that they are dreaming for.

Speaking before the more than three thousand cheering crowd during the 58th Charter Anniversary Celebration of Calbayog City, President Arroyo expressed appreciation that all the Congressmen of Samar Island were present and that the leaders of Samar Island agree that in Samar whenever people think of development, they must think as One Island, One People, One Culture, not as Western Samar, not as Eastern Samar, not as Northern Samar.

President Arroyo urged the people of Samar to help find ways in order to bring back the glory and splendor of Samar and the enthusiasm of the people when her father, the late former President Diosdado Macapagal when he constructed the first Port of Calbayog.

On the 58th Charter Anniversary of Calbayog, the President challenged the people to aspire for peace and progress. She revealed that she has personally assigned to Central Philippines and Eastern Visayas the best commanding officers that she could find. She was referring to General Cardoso Luna of the Central Visayas Command and Major General Rodrigo Maclang of the 8th Infantry Division.

With the government officials and the people aiming and working together, achieving peace and progress is never an impossibility.

She called on the people to help them in the goal of achieving peace in every barangay in the Samar Island. Peace can only be attained, the President said, through a close partnership among the officials of the local governments, the people and the armed forces.

Development, the President enthusiastically said, will be achieved if the people will allow, invite and encourage tourists to visit one of the most beautiful island in the entire Philippines – the Samar Island. (PIA 8) [top]
