“Show your activism in building houses for the poor,” GK volunteer dares NVizcaya NGOs

BAMBANG, Nueva Vizcaya (18 October) -- “Instead of joining rallies against the government, we should instead help in uplifting the plight of the poor in our communities.” This was the statement of a Gawad Kalinga (GK) volunteer here who stood firm in encouraging the youth and other organizations in the country.

Wilfred Ross Delizo, GK Luzon coordinator for Nueva Vizcaya said many rallies by anti-government groups have been wasted in the streets and instead sowed disunity among all sectors in the country without accomplishing their role in helping to improve the economic conditions of the poor.

“We have tried to voice out our grievances by exercising parliament in the streets, but may we ask ourselves: Did we really do these to help our poor fellow Filipinos?” Delizo said.

According to Delizo, activism in the streets should instead be transformed into concrete actions that seek to provide assistance for the poor sectors like joining the GK activities in building houses for the poor.

Joining the GK activities, Delizo said is more worthwhile and meaningful in the sense that “we are all helping each other in addressing the basic problems of the poor through building of houses and providing them with livelihood opportunities.”

He said GK evolves in the spirit of ‘bayanihan’(helping each other), a value among Filipinos which is now waning because of self – interest motives and greed.

According to Delizo, GK serves as a wake up call for Filipinos inorder to divert their attention from senseless rallies into a noble activity and volunteerism by joining other volunteers in building houses for the poor in their communities.

“We are raising up our voices on high pitch levels but we do not even provide whisper of comfort to our neighbors? I think this is pure plasticity and stupidity on our part,” Delizo added.

Delizo said activism should start from a change in oneself and helping others earn a decent living.

He also praised GK volunteers in the province such as representatives from the academe, government and private sector organizations and agencies in their efforts to built houses for the poor in the province.

GK movement in the province has completed the construction of 62 housing units in various GK sites while 63 houses are on-going completion works. (PIA NVizcaya) [top]
