NVizcaya distributes 150,000 tilapia fingerlings for fish conservation month
BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya (18 October) -- Local agriculture officials here distributed on Tuesday(October ) some 150,000 pieces of tilapia fingerlings as part of the activities lined up for this month’s observance of Fish Conservation with the theme,” May Buhay ang Dagat”.
Alex Domingo, agriculture and fisheries specialist said the fingerlings were disposed in various fish sanctuaries and selected fish ponds in the province where they would reproduce to augment the dwindling fish supply in rivers which will benefit villagers near them.
“We have observed that our fish supply is slowly depleting within the rivers due to indiscriminate practice of fishing methods. So this fish supply intends to supplement this shortage,” Domingo said.
From the sanctuaries, these fish supply would soon be trooping to communal bodies of water and propagate for the benefit of villagers.
The fish sanctuaries serve as breeding areas of fish since these are being co-managed by the local government units and the local agriculture office here.
Agriculture officials said other activities planned for the month-long Fish Conservation observance is a series of fora for fish farmers and technologists in Tuguegarao City. (PIA NVizcaya) [top]
